Wedding Makeup Tips the Mom’s Should Know

More often now, mothers of the bride and groom are choosing to have their makeup done as well, but there are specific things the moms should consider beforehand.

Getting ready on the day of the wedding is one of the most memorable parts of the day for the bride and her attendants. If she's invited her mom and future mother-in-law to join in on the fun, it's even more special. More often now, mothers of the bride and groom are choosing to have their makeup done as well, but there are specific things the moms should consider beforehand.
You'll want to be as prepared as possible on the morning of the wedding, which is why I’m sharing the wedding makeup Dos and Don’ts the mothers of the bride and groom should know.
Do: Plan a pre-wedding trial.
Makeup trials aren't just for the bride anymore. Many makeup artists recommend moms to have one, too. Having a plan in advance of the wedding day will help calm everyone's nerves, and you'll have time to perfect the look you're going for, so that there are no unexpected surprises on the wedding day. Especially if you're considering makeup you're not used to—like airbrushed foundation or false eyelashes—a trial will give you the opportunity to make decisions without any pressure. Ali, Long Island Makeup and Hair recommends scheduling your trial on the same day as the bride, so that you can both support and encourage decisions together. This can also be a fun day of bonding and pampering.
Do: Enhance your eyelashes.
Speaking of lashes, you should absolutely consider having your makeup artist apply them on the wedding day. Even if your natural eyelashes are full and luscious (lucky you!), extra lashes will make all the difference. Your eyes will pop in photos, which is especially important if you wear glasses. Ali, Long Island Makeup and Hair suggests clusters of individual lashes for those who are trying it for the first time. They will give an uplifted, natural look, without feeling too heavy or overwhelming.
Do: Trust your artist.
It's important to trust that your daughter or future daughter-in-law selected a wonderful makeup artist and hairstylist that she thinks is the best person to do the job. While you should definitely make it known if there is something you don't want—say, a smoky eye or heavy contouring—you should remain positive, calm, and trusting. Go with the flow and trust that they won't steer you wrong. With over 20 years experience, I find most mother’s are nervous having their makeup done, and afterwards want to hire me to “look like this everyday!”.
Don't: Get forced outside of your comfort zone.
It's one thing to trust a makeup artist—he or she is a professional, after all—but it's another thing entirely to allow yourself to be talked into something you don't feel comfortable with. If you want to look great in photos, confidence is key, and wearing a bold lip color unlike anything you've ever worn before won't help you feel like the best version of yourself.
Don't: Be afraid to speak up.
Moms are often quiet in the makeup chair, which tells the artist to do whatever she thinks will look best. If you have a specific look in mind, relay this information to the makeup artist (and bring photos, if you can!), so that she's better able to give you a look you'll love. And if you don't love something? Let her know. Changing something small along the way is easier than starting from scratch.
